I read a fairly large number of substack letters, op-eds, and front page news and opinions offered in publications like the Atlantic. And I have to say, Andrew, that this column made my hair stay on end, and is the most clear and valiant call to action I have yet run into. And it is so true that all that stands between us and ‘the Devil’ is that flawed but glorious, painstakingly constructed at great sacrifice over the past several centuries, the Law. And now we must discover not only who we are, and if we will protect it come what may, but which of our remaining public institutions will stand with us. Thanks for your courage and clarity along the way.
The one word of action in this opinion is “solidarity.”
That was the rallying cry that overthrew the communist government of Poland through the strike led by the stalwart Lech Walesa.
We need a Walesa now to overthrow the Trumpian autocracy. But even more than a charismatic leader like Walesa, such as does not now appear among todays facile democrats, we need our free press, while it is still free, to issue the clarion call for federal workers to strike in solidarity with those of us who cherish their rights and liberties, their environment and their hard won and self-sustained entitlements to healthcare, education and life’s basic necessities.
The Solidarity movement was beaten down in 1980/81 and martial law was established. The communist government was only overthrown in 1989, when the regimes all over the Warsaw pact started to crumble.
I don’t disagree that solidarity is important, because it’s the key weapon against the ‘divide and conquer’ tactics of the other side, but it’s important to be accurate when talking about history
Your appearance with Judge Luttig today on Deadline Whitehouse underscored the importance of solidarity. It is disheartening to hear that the Trump laser beam attacking law firms has already chilled other law firms. It is clear they will be picked off one by one if they don’t stand up as a united front, fight back and stand up for one another. Judge Luttig mentioned that the impeachment actions against judges have sent a chill through the courts. Have these threats also sent a chill through the conservative wing of the Supreme Court? Do they feel sufficiently cocooned that they have the luxury of engaging in intellectual exercises while the judicial system collapses?
Alito’s dissent in the 5-4 decision re:freezing USAID payments for completed contracts was shocking in its disdain for the lower court judges and for a binding legal contract!
Andrew, your summary about what has happened so far, item by item, is absolutely invaluable for us to have, to share with our many friends and family members, at home, at work, and abroad. It not only keeps us all up-to-date, and helps to put everything in a very bright spotlight, that cannot be hidden or denied, but will prove to be a lasting reference for us all, here, and beyond our borders, as the months and years pass. I do not know of anyone else who has done, or is doing this for the public. We will be spreading the Truth, and this is another HUGE way we can help!!! The question isn’t just what’s happening, but how we’re reacting—and whether we’re unconsciously moving the goalposts.”
It feels like we are existing in a constantly abusive relationship and suddenly when the abuser just vaguely smiles for once we get giddy with happiness!
