The Babka Incident

How One Babka + One Innis = Vet Visit

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update from me today—and an explanation for why I’ve been a little quiet the past couple of days. Spoiler: it involves a chocolate babka and a clever and hungry dog. I also share a preview of an upcoming post about the recent attacks on lawyers, law firms, and judges. Thanks for being here, and stay tuned—more soon.

Hello, Substackers.

So, have a great weekend.

This is Saturday.

And some of you may be saying, where on God’s green earth have you been?

Because I have not been posting in the last… 24 hours or maybe even 48 hours.

And so you might be like, have you given up on Substack just soon after starting?

And the answer is no.

And you might be wondering also, although I like to pet my dog all the time, why he’s sitting here in my arms.

And that is because two days ago, a friend of mine was staying here. She’ll go nameless, but she knows who she is. And she left me a note saying she left me a chocolate babka.

And I was like, hmm, I didn’t see it.

So I asked her—I called her—and I asked where she left it.

She said she left it on the kitchen counter, which is fairly low or low enough for…

And being a dog, he does what dogs do—which is, he ate the entire chocolate babka.

And so for those of you who have dogs, you know that chocolate is particularly bad and can be poisonous depending on different types of chocolate. And then also the butter in the chocolate babka is particularly bad for dogs.

And he got really, really ill—the most ill I have ever seen him.

And so I was up all night with him. Let’s just say he made a mess.

For those of you who have had puppies or babies, you’re aware of that.

He then went to the vet in the hospital the next morning, where they were just terrific. They gave him a saline solution to replenish the loss of liquids, and they gave him something to calm his stomach and monitored him. And he is good as new. He’s on a very calming diet right now, and as you can see, he looks none the worse for wear.

He’s got his summer grooming cut, so he’s all ready for the summer, and soon he’ll just be right back to normal and eating all of his normal food.

So I wanted to explain to you why I was not thinking about Substack—I was thinking about this little fellow.

But also, right after this, I’m going to record something about the attack on lawyers, law firms, and judges.

It’s really important to view the constellation of attacks that have come from the Trump administration in the form of executive orders against those three groups—lawyers, law firms, and judges—as a way to dampen the litigation and the willingness of those people to take on actions by the executive, even actions that can in good faith be questioned.

And more than that, the courts in numerous cases have found that not only is it good faith litigation, but it is actually righteous litigation—meaning that the plaintiffs have won a surprising number of cases.

So I will be doing that. So stay tuned for that. I will be posting that either this evening or first thing tomorrow morning.

So I will get back on track now that everything’s back to normal here.

Have a great weekend and see you on Substack.

Take care.
